Brownie

1. THE BROWNIE

A Brownie is a girl between ages 7 and 12 or until she leaves primary school.

The Brownie Promise
I promise to do my best:
to do my duty to God,
to serve my country
and help other people,
and to keep the Brownie Law.

The Brownie Law
1. A Brownie obeys and respects her elders.
2. A Brownie thinks of others before herself.
3. A Brownie tells the truth.
4. A Brownie is neat and tidy.
5. A Brownie is thrifty.
6. A Brownie plays and works cheerfully.


2. THE BROWNIE PACK

A Brownie Pack should consist of not less than two sixes under a Brownie Leader and another who is the Assistant Brownie Leader. The Assistant Brownie Leader should be capable of administering the Pack in the absence of the Brownie Leader.

A minimum number of a Pack is twelve. Twenty-four is the ideal number. This may increase to a maximum of thirty-six with the assistance of an Assistant Brownie Leader.
A Brownie Pack should be registered by a sponsor with Girl Guides Singapore within 4 weeks of its formation.

3. THE BROWNIE LEADERS

Qualifications

(i) Brownie Leader : has attained the age of 21 years. Assistant Brownie Leader : has attained the age of 18 years.
(ii) Have attended and completed the Basic Training as laid down by the Training Committee.

Appointment

(i) Before nominating the Brownie Leader for training, the sponsor must satisfy herself/himself by personal interview that the potential leader has a positive attitude towards Guiding.
(ii) Before issuing the Permanent Warrant, the Trainer/Commissioner should satisfy herself by a visit or visits to the Pack:
a) that the Brownie Guider understands the educational value of Brownie tests;
b) that she can tell a story to the Brownies and hold their attention;
c) that she has the ability to run a whole meeting in a balanced and satisfactory manner;
d) that she has read "The Brownie Guider’s Handbook" and "The Brownie Handbook";
e) that she understands the importance of outdoor training in the Brownie programme, and knows the facilities for such activities in her own neighbourhood; and
f) that she has kept, or has been responsible for keeping, Pack accounts satisfactorily, where applicable.
Responsibilities

The Brownie Leader has a free hand in the management of her Pack and the training of her Brownies provided that she adheres to the policy and rules of the Association. On receipt of her Permanent Warrant, a Brownie Leader may test her Brownies for the Golden Badge, Golden Bar and Golden Hand tests. The organisation and standard of testing are the responsibility of the Brownie Leader with reference to the chapter on TESTING in the book of Policy, Organisation and Rules (P.O.R).

4. THE BROWNIE SIX

TheBrownie Six consists of six Brownies, including the Sixer and theSecond and assumes the name of Elf, Gnome, Fairy, Pixie, Sprite or Imp.


5. THE BROWNIE SIXER AND SECOND

(i) The Brownie Sixer : A Sixer is appointed by the Brownie Leader to take charge of the Six. A Sixer should be a Golden Bar Brownie.
(ii) The Brownie Second : A Second is appointed by the Brownie Leader. She takes the place of the Sixer when she is absent.


6. THE BROWNIE UNIFORM



Full uniform with scarf and hat is worn for the first time at the Enrolment Ceremony when the Brownie receives her Golden Badge. On joining the Pack, a Tweenie may wear her uniform with the Six emblem but without the scarf and hat. The Golden Badge is given to her on Enrolment Day.

Permission must be obtained from the Brownie Leader for a Brownie to wear her uniform other than at Pack meetings.

7. THE ENROLMENT CEREMONY

The Enrolment is a special ceremony where the Tweenies in the Pack become Brownies. It will be the first time they wear their full uniform and receive the Golden Badge.

This is the way a Brownie is enrolled :

The Pack will form the Brownie Ring. The Brownie Leader will ask the Sixer to take her Tweenies to the centre of the Ring near the Toadstool.

Brownie Leader : "Do you know your Brownie Promise? "
Tweenie : "Yes, I do."
The Tweenie who is to be enrolled, and all Brownies and Leaders salute while she makes her Promise.
Tweenie : "I promise to do my best, to do my duty to God, to serve my country and help other people, and to keep the Brownie Law."

The Brownie Leader pins the Golden Badge on the Brownie’s scarf.
Brownie Leader : "You are now a Brownie of the ….. Pack. I trust you to do your best."

Brownie Leader shakes hands with the Brownie.
Brownie Leader : "Pack, welcome our new Brownie."
Pack gives her the Grand Salute.

8. THE MOTTO, SALUTE, SIGN, HANDSHAKE, GOOD TURN AND PACK EMBLEM

The Motto : "Lend a Hand"

The Salute : Three fingers of the right hand upright, thumb and little finger bent and touching. The hand raised to the cap. The three fingers symbolise the Threefold Promise.

The Sign : As above but the hand raised only to shoulder level.

The Handshake : A Brownie shakes hands with the left hand.

The Good Turn : A Brownie does at least one Good Turn a day.

The Pack Emblem : The Toadstool.

9. THE BROWNIE WINGS

The Brownie Wings is awarded to Brownies who have passed the Golden Hand tests before Primary Six. It is worn on the Guide Uniform when the Golden Hand Brownie joins a Guide Company.


10. GOLDEN BADGE TEST

The Brownie needs to understand:
The Brownie Promise
The Law
The Motto
The Good Turn
The Salute
The Sign
The Handshake
The Grand Salute
The Brownie Smile
The Brownie Ring
The Pow-Wow Ring
The Brownie Badge
The Brownie Uniform

She also needs to:
  • know how to wear the uniform and fold the scarf;
  • tie a reef knot and know its uses;
  • read the Brownie story and at least two other Brownie stories of other countries.


11. GOLDEN BAR AND GOLDEN HAND TEST SYLLABUS

The Golden Bar and Golden Hand test syllabus are grouped into modules. There are altogether 12 modules:

The Brownie may choose any Point to work on at any time. She may also select which module she wants to work on first.

In order to qualify for the Golden Bar, she needs to complete five modules, one under each Point. She will qualify for the Golden Hand after she has completed the remaining seven modules. After she has gained the Golden Hand Badge, she may take the Chief Commissioner’s Badge.

The Challenges

There are many challenges for her to work on in every module. They are:

POINT ONE: PERSONAL AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT


MODULE 1 - HEALTHY ME
Know the importance of good health and hygiene
  - A balanced diet
  - Keep fit activities
  - Sleep and relaxation
  - Cleanliness and care of body

MODULE 2 – COURTEOUS ME
Behave appropriately at all times
  - Meeting people for the first time
  - Friendship
  - Manners at home
  - With friends at home
  - Manners at the table

MODULE 3 – CULTURED ME
Cultivate an interest in the Arts
  - Enjoy and appreciate the Arts
  - Be creative. Choose one of the following:
  - Be creative in crafts
  - Be creative in music
  - Be creative in dance and song
  - Be creative in poems and stories
  - Be creative in drama

POINT TWO: HOME

MODULE 1 - HOME SAFETY
Know how to keep my home safe
  - Know the safety rules in the home with regard to:
  - Appliances and utensils
  - Fire
  - Height
  - Other Safety Measures
  - Strangers

MODULE 2 - HOME DUTIES
Know how to cook, clean and tidy up
  - Cook, serve and wash up after a simple meal for two
  - Wash my Brownie uniform
  - Iron my Brownie scarf
  - Sew buttons
  - Fold clothes
  - Clean shoes
  - Clean and tidy a bedroom

POINT THREE: OUTDOOR

MODULE 1 – DISCOVERING NATURE
Enjoy the wonders of nature
  - Attend a Pack Holiday; OR
  - Go on a visit to the Zoo, Bird Park, Botanic Gardens, reservoir, beach, or any of the nature reserves; OR
  - Attend a Brownie Revel

MODULE 2 – A GREEN WORLD
Do my part in conserving the environment
  - Keep the environment clean and green

POINT FOUR: COMMUNITY

MODULE 1 – MY COUNTRY
Know more about Singapore
  - Singapore - the island state, races, costumes, food and festivals
  - Meaning of the National Anthem, National Flag, Coat of Arms, National Symbol and National Flower
  - Know our President, Prime Minister and Minister for Education

MODULE 2 - MY NEIGHBOURHOOD
Know my neighbourhood
  - Share some interesting information about my neighbourhood
  - Know the Road Safety measures to take when going round my neighbourhood

MODULE 3 – HELPER
Know how to respond in an emergency
  - How to recognise danger in an emergency, e.g., fire, drowning, attacked by bees, robbery
  - What to do in an emergency, e.g., who to call
  - How to take and deliver a message (about 15 words)
  - First Aid
  - Treating a cut

POINT FIVE: INTERNATIONAL

MODULE 1 - MY BROWNIE FRIEND
Befriend a Brownie from another country
  - Have a Brownie pen-pal from another country and correspond for a period of time. Contact penpalsgirlguides.org.sg

MODULE 2 - MY WORLD
Know a little bit more of the world
  - My Guide World
  - Know and understand the meaning of the Guide World Flag
  - Sing one verse of the World Song
  - Know the names of the four World Centres
  - The World I Know
  - Know what is happening in the world

12. THE CHIEF COMMISSIONER'S BADGE

When the Brownie has completed her Golden Hand, she may work for the Chief Commissioner's Badge, the highest award for a Brownie.

She has to attain at least five proficiency badges, one from each of the five points before she can work for the badge:
a) Personal and Social Development : Athlete Badge, Book lover Badge, Dental Health Badge or Craft Badge
b) Home : Cook Badge, Home Safety Badge or First Aider Badge
c) Outdoor : Swimmer Badge, Observer Badge or Gardener Badge
d) Community : Crime Prevention Badge, Musician Badge, Environmentalist Badge or Entertainer Badge
e) International : World Brownie Friendship Badge

The test requirements are:

Know your Movement (Clause 1)
Read the book on "History of Guiding in Singapore". Compile an interesting scrapbook on 10 important events in Guiding. Illustrate each event with interesting sketches and newspaper cuttings. Be prepared to answer questions on them. (Please take note of current events)
 
Know your Division (Clause 2)
Give the set-up of the uniformed section of the Singapore Girl Guides Association
Know the set-up of your own Division. Name the Chief Commissioner and Division Commissioners in your Division.
Clauses 1 and 2 are to be compiled into a logbook and to be submitted one month before the test date.
 
Know your Country (Clause 3)
Be able to tell the tester in an interesting way some aspects of life in Singapore eg: transport, food, festivals, places of interest, etc.
 
Lend-A-Hand (Clause 4)
You must be able to "Lend-A-Hand" on the test date.
Clauses 3 and 4 are tested at Headquarters level.


13. TESTING

a) The Division Commissioner is responsible for authorizing the appointment of all testers within her area.

b) In order to ensure a uniform and satisfactory standard of testing it is recommended that:
-  a warranted Brownie Leader may test Brownies up till Golden Hand
-  a warranted Brownie Leader or a person with special knowledge in the subject may be appointed to test in Brownie Proficiency Badges

c) A certificate awarded by another association may qualify the holder for a proficiency badge provided that:
- the examination covers the syllabus of the Brownie Test
- the certificate is of recent date i.e. within 2 years

d) A Brownie, whether or not she is a member of the Extension section, who through physical disability is unable to take any clause of the Golden Bar or Golden Hand syllabus as laid down, may with the approval of the Brownie Branch Commissioner, take alternative tests and be awarded accordingly.

e) In all tests, although a high standard of efficiency is desirable, the amount of effort made by the candidate is equally important, and should be taken into account by the tester.
