President's Challenge

29 Aug 2008

Friends of Charity, combined fundraising effort in support of President’s Challenge 2008.

The President’s Challenge is an annual series of community-based activities initiated by President S R Nathan in 2000. The objectives of President’s Challenge are firstly, to increase awareness about how the community can get involved in helping the less fortunate and secondly, to raise funds for the social service sector. It is hoped that by doing this, a more cohesive society would be created. The Challenge also aims to convey that the more able in society have a special responsibility to help the rest of society and that all Singaporeans can make a difference in our community. Girl Guides Singapore took the lead in the first-ever combined Uniformed Groups fundraising project for President’s Challenge 2008, with an aim to nurture Uniformed Group members for active citizenry in the President’s Challenge for “A Giving People, A Caring Nation”.  With support from the Ministry of Education, Nestle Singapore and the other 8 Uniformed Groups, a total of $200,810 was raised for the President’s Challenge. A mammoth effort, about 31,000 Uniformed Group members from over 100 schools participated in the project.

Besides selling chocolate bars to family and friends, Uniformed Group members were also stationed at selected NTUC FairPrice outlets throughout Singapore every Saturday and Sunday of July 2008, to bring the President’s Challenge message to shoppers and the public.

The cheque was presented to President Nathan on 29 Aug 2008 at Guide House, witnessed by Heads and members of all nine Uniformed Groups.
