Reaching out to the community - Girl Guides@Lighthouse School
On 8th April 2009, Girl Guides from CHIJ Secondary Toa Payoh represented Girl Guides Singapore in reaching out to the less fortunate at Lighthouse School. Lighthouse School, which was previously known as Singapore School for the Visually Handicapped (SSVH), was founded in 1965. The school provides special education to visually handicapped children and to children with additional disabilities. With the motto “Persevere to Excel”, Lighthouse school has helped to provide the students with valuable life skills.
Company Leader, Eunice Lee presented cartons of Girl Guides cookies to the Principal of the school, Mr. Koh, along with a compact disc (CD) which we had prepared for the children. We made use of the recording studio within CHIJ Secondary to record some songs for the children. One of the songs included in the CD and sung by our very own Guides was “This Little Guiding Light of Mine”. We chose this song as we felt that it is a good representation of our Guiding spirit. We hoped to share their joy with the children through the lively song.
Personal Reflection: The cookie distribution has provided us with an opportunity to learn more about the people who are less privileged than we are. We have learned that everyone, regardless of their physical and mental abilities, has an equal chance to succeed in life, and that we should not look down on anyone. We concluded that we are extremely fortunate as compared to others. We are privileged enough to receive a good education here in Singapore, and that we should not take what we have for granted. We have certainly enjoyed our experience at the Lighthouse School!
